I am so ridiculously excited for you!!! I have limited international travel experience besides Paris, but am considering a bit of a trip myself this summer and will certainly pass along any advice and information I find!
Wow you are going on a trip lucky you but don't expect packin advice from me hubby says I always over pack I say I am a woman of course I over pack I like to be prepared.....lol
My husband backpacked through Europe for (I think) 30 days and spent right around 2k on it. They used the Eurail pass, bought ahead of time, with I think 10 travel days on it. They would use those passes to sleep on overnight trains to get between long distances (no sleeper car though because that cost extra).
Hostels are a great place to stay, depending on your comfort level with sharing space with a lot of people you don't know. But some of my favorite travel experiences have come from times spent with new friends in a hostel.
Packing, if you decide to use an actual backpacker's backpack (you know the big tall one (can you tell this isn't my thing)) be sure to practice with it first. When you're putting together your trip wardrobe for packing, think about what you'll be most comfortable moving around in. I had a trusty pair of flats that, for me, were more comfortable than tennis shoes, so I wore those with dresses a lot of times when traveling. Saved on the bulk of tennis shoes and jeans in my back pack. Beyond that, plan to wash clothes out in the sink and hang them up to dry overnight, especially if you're spending more than one night in a single location.
Food can be done cheap, if you're willing to buy items from a grocery store and eat those. When I traveled through Europe with my husband, we typically only ate one meal at a fancy place meant to give a taste of the local cuisine and otherwise stuck to street stands or McDonald's. That way our fancy meal felt like a splurge and treat without overdoing our budget.
Good luck and have fun!
I have no advice, but I wanted to let you know how JEALOUS I am of your adventure! :)
Wow, I must say that you are a true traveller. Enjoy all your trips and photo shots.
